BAIÃO HOUSE

Set on a privileged hillside in the municipality of Baião, this single-family residence is defined by its direct and permanent relationship with the Douro River landscape, where the view becomes a structuring element of the architectural proposal. The project is developed through a careful reading of the territory, taking advantage of the site’s topography and solar orientation to enhance both the interior and exterior living experience.

The architecture is characterised by a strong and expressive volumetric composition, highlighted by imposing pergola-like canopies in pigmented concrete, which confer identity, depth and protection to the living spaces. These structural elements reinforce the contemporary character of the house, creating dynamic plays of light and shadow while precisely framing the surrounding landscape views.

The extensive and carefully articulated programme is distributed across three levels, clearly organising the different functional areas of the house. The basement accommodates a generous garage, complemented by technical areas, a wine cellar, gym, spa and support spaces. The upper floors house the social, leisure and private areas, including five suites, a games room and spacious, light-filled living areas, all oriented towards the river.

Outdoor spaces play a central role in the experience of the residence, with two swimming pools strategically positioned to maximise solar exposure and panoramic views over the Douro. The continuity between interior and exterior is reinforced by large glazed openings, dissolving the boundaries between architecture and landscape.

From a constructive perspective, the use of pigmented concrete provides robustness, durability and a material expression that is coherent with the character of the place, establishing a balanced dialogue between contemporary intervention and the surrounding natural setting. The result is a residence with a strong and sophisticated architectural language, where comfort, exclusivity and landscape converge into a unique living experience.
