A restoration and expansion project that harmonizes historical tradition with contemporary architecture.
The root of the project.
The Quinta do Pomar project, located in Gualtar, Braga, consists of a profound intervention involving the construction, demolition, and expansion of an existing single-family home. The aim is to recover the historical essence of the property and the 17th-century manor house, while simultaneously integrating a contemporary language suited to the demands of modern life.
The architectural intervention stands out for the meticulous rehabilitation of the original structures—the main house (manor house), the annexes, and the chapel—preserving their historical authenticity and constructive identity. In dialogue with these pre-existing elements, new, partially buried volumes were introduced, taking advantage of the natural slope of the land to house complementary social and private spaces, such as suites, leisure areas, and a swimming pool.
This operation involved a significant interior structural reinforcement, accompanied by adaptation to new contemporary finishes and construction techniques. The project thus establishes a dialectical relationship between the old and the new, where materials, finishes, and program are clearly articulated, respecting the historical interpretation of the whole without sacrificing comfort, functionality, and contemporary expression.
Alongside the building interventions, the project emphasizes the integration of the construction with the surrounding terrain. Existing vegetation is preserved and complemented by the introduction of new species, creating natural barriers that guarantee privacy and reinforce the relationship between architecture and landscape. The careful selection of trees and plants contributes to a dense, harmonious, and silent integration, reinforcing the introspective character of the Pomar Farm.
More than a simple rehabilitation, this project asserts itself as a conscious gesture of heritage appreciation, projecting the past into the future through architecture that respects memory and incorporates innovation.

New volumes do not compete with the Solar; they accompany it. They are discreetly inscribed in the terrain, allowing the landscape and memory to guide the experience of the space. The transition between the old and the contemporary happens naturally, almost silently, through light, material, and scale.
And it is in this balanced tension that Quinta do Pomar finds its identity: timeless, serene, and deeply rooted.
